Old Bergen Museum

About

Old Bergen Museum is an open‑air museum that brings the city’s past to life through a carefully reconstructed neighbourhood of wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Set in the Sandviken district, it recreates the atmosphere of old Bergen with narrow streets, painted facades and interiors furnished to reflect the daily lives of merchants, craftsmen and families who once shaped the city’s character. Walking among the buildings feels like stepping into a living time capsule, where each house tells a different story. Inside the historic homes, visitors encounter period rooms, workshops and exhibitions that illustrate everything from domestic routines to trade, social customs and childhood in earlier centuries. During summer, costumed guides and theatrical performances animate the streets, adding voices and personalities to the preserved environment. Today Old Bergen Museum stands as a vivid reminder of the city’s wooden‑house heritage and the communities that defined it. It offers an engaging, atmospheric experience that connects modern visitors with Bergen’s urban history in a direct and memorable way.
