Bergenhus Fortress is located at the entrance of Bergen Harbour, in the centre of Bergen, at Bergenhus 4, 5003 Bergen, Norway. It is one of the city’s oldest and best-preserved fortifications, set right on the waterfront and easy to include in a central Bergen sightseeing walk. Nearby, the fortress is especially close to Bryggen, Bergen’s UNESCO-listed Hanseatic wharf, so visitors can move easily between two of the city’s most important historic areas. The surrounding harbour district also includes Håkon’s Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower, both major attractions within the fortress grounds, as well as views across Vågen and the busy quayside. A short walk away you will also find the Fish Market, Bergen Harbour, and the narrow streets leading toward the old town, making this one of the best places in Bergen for combining history, waterfront scenery, and classic city sights. The area is also a pleasant place to stroll, with cafés, museums, and several viewpoints nearby that make the visit feel broader than the fortress alone.
