Stiftsgården

About

Stiftsgården is one of Trondheim’s most distinguished landmarks, a vast wooden palace built in the 1770s for the wealthy widow Cecilie Christine Schøller. Its elegant Baroque‑inspired façade and refined interiors reflect the ambitions of an 18th‑century elite eager to express status through architecture. Today it serves as the Royal Residence in Trondheim, used during official visits and major national ceremonies, giving the building a living role in Norway’s public life. Behind its long ochre walls lies a sequence of stately rooms, grand staircases and period details that evoke the cultural world of the city’s merchant aristocracy. Set along Munkegata, the palace forms a graceful counterpoint to the urban axis leading toward Nidaros Cathedral, anchoring the historic centre with a sense of continuity and quiet grandeur.
