NTNU Ringve Botanical Garden

About

NTNU Ringve Botanical Garden spreads across the historic Ringve estate, offering one of Trondheim’s most serene and diverse green landscapes. As part of the NTNU University Museum, the garden combines scientific purpose with a welcoming, park‑like atmosphere. Its collections range from Arctic and alpine plants to traditional Norwegian species and themed sections that explore global flora, all arranged to highlight ecological relationships and seasonal change. The estate’s coastal setting adds a distinctive character, with open lawns, winding paths and views toward the fjord creating a sense of calm. Historic buildings and old trees lend the garden a cultural depth that complements its botanical mission. Throughout the year it serves as a living laboratory, a place for learning and conservation, and a peaceful retreat where visitors can experience the richness of plant life within Trondheim’s natural and historical landscape.

Location

The NTNU Ringve Botanical Garden is a breathtaking sanctuary of biodiversity located on the Lade peninsula at Lade allé 60, just a short distance east of Trondheim’s bustling city center. Spanning approximately 32 acres, this living museum is beautifully situated on a hillside that slopes gently toward the Trondheimsfjord. It serves as a vital research and educational facility for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, featuring meticulously themed sections including an arboretum, a renaissance garden, and a collection of traditional perennials. Its elevated position offers visitors stunning panoramic views of the water and the surrounding coastal landscape. The area surrounding the garden is a rich tapestry of cultural history and natural beauty. Most notably, the garden surrounds the Ringve Music Museum, Norway’s national museum for music, which is housed in a magnificent historic manor. Just a few minutes' walk away is the Ladestien, one of Trondheim's most beloved coastal trails, which stretches for several kilometers along the shoreline and leads to the popular Korsvika swimming area. Nearby, visitors can also explore the ancient Lade Church, a stone structure dating back to the 12th century that stands as a testament to the region’s long heritage.
