Munkholmen

About

Munkholmen lies just off Trondheim’s shoreline, a small island with a remarkably layered past that mirrors the city’s own history. Once a place of execution in the Viking Age, it later became home to a Benedictine monastery whose quiet cloisters shaped the island’s early identity. After the Reformation, Munkholmen was transformed into a fortress and state prison, its thick stone walls and circular tower still dominating the landscape. Over the centuries it guarded the harbour, held political prisoners and served as a strategic outpost, yet today it feels peaceful and open, reached by a short boat ride from the city centre. Visitors can explore its courtyards, ramparts and vaulted rooms while enjoying sweeping views of the fjord. Munkholmen’s blend of tranquillity and dramatic history makes it one of Trondheim’s most evocative and memorable destinations.

Location

Munkholmen lies as a small islet in the Trondheimsfjord, roughly two kilometers offshore from Trondheim's city center near where the Nidelva River meets the sea. Accessible by frequent 10-minute ferries from the Ravnkloa harbor or St. Olavs pir, this historic "Monk's Islet" evolved from Viking execution ground to Benedictine monastery, fortress, prison, and WWII outpost, now serving as a serene summer escape. On the island itself, visitors wander remnants of defensive walls, a round tower, and WWII bunkers amid grassy paths and the city's finest beach for swimming, sunbathing, and picnics—locals flock here in warm months for fjord dips and casual hangs. A seasonal café offers refreshments with sea views, while guided tours reveal layered history from pagan rites to modern leisure. Back on the mainland nearby, the harbor area buzzes with Ravnkloa Fish Market's fresh seafood stalls and pirate-themed boat rides, steps from central Trondheim's gems. A short walk reaches Torvet square and the soaring Olav Tryggvason Statue amid market stalls and cafés, then uphill to majestic Nidaros Cathedral's Gothic spires, Norway's national shrine paired with the Archbishop's Palace Museum's Viking relics and crown jewels.
