Gamle Bybro

About

Gamle Bybro, the Old Town Bridge, is one of Trondheim’s most beloved symbols, spanning the Nidelva with a graceful red‑painted structure that has welcomed travellers since 1685. Originally built as part of the city’s fortifications, it once controlled access to the riverfront and the approaches to Kristiansten Fortress. Its iconic carved gate, often called the “Portal of Happiness,” frames a postcard‑perfect view toward the colourful wooden warehouses of Bakklandet, creating one of the city’s most recognisable scenes. Though rebuilt and strengthened over time, the bridge retains its historic charm, offering a gentle passage between the medieval heart of Trondheim and the lively neighbourhoods across the river. Today it is both a practical crossing and a place to pause, admire the water’s reflections and experience the quiet beauty that has made Gamle Bybro a cherished landmark for centuries.

Location

Gamle Bybro spans the Nidelva River in central Trondheim, linking the south end of Kjøpmannsgata in the city centre to the vibrant Bakklandet neighborhood across the water. This iconic red wooden bridge, first built in 1681 after the great fire and rebuilt in 1861, stands as one of the city's most photographed landmarks, offering postcard views of colorful wharf houses and the flowing river. Its prime riverside position immerses it amid Trondheim's densest cluster of attractions, creating a perfect launchpad for discovery. Just east in Bakklandet, timber-clad warehouses house trendy cafés, craft shops, and bistros where locals linger over coffee amid the neighborhood's bohemian charm and narrow cobblestone lanes—ideal for a relaxed wander or meal with river vistas. Westward up the hill rises majestic Nidaros Cathedral, Norway's grandest Gothic shrine with soaring spires and intricate stonework, paired with the adjacent Archbishop's Palace Museum's Viking relics and crown jewels exhibit. Nearby Stiftsgården, Scandinavia's largest wooden royal residence, invites garden strolls and tours of its baroque interiors.
