The historic Town Hall of Levoča

About

The historic Town Hall of Levoča is one of the finest Renaissance buildings in Slovakia, a symbol of the city’s former wealth and autonomy. Built in stages from the 15th to the 17th century, it once served as the centre of municipal power, justice, and trade. Its distinctive arcaded loggia, added in 1615, became a civic stage where important announcements and ceremonies were held. Inside, visitors can explore the Council Hall, preserved with wooden ceilings, coats of arms, and period furnishings that reflect the authority of the Spiš burghers. The Hall of the Knights displays Renaissance murals depicting virtues and allegories, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic tastes of the era. Another highlight is the historic courtroom, where justice was administered under strict medieval laws. The Town Hall also houses exhibitions of guild artefacts, documents, and ceremonial objects that reveal how Levoča became one of the most influential towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. Together with the adjacent cage of shame and the towering church of St James, it forms the heart of Levoča’s UNESCO‑listed square.

Location

The historic Town Hall of Levoča is located right in the heart of Levoča's main square, called Námestie Majstra Pavla (Master Paul Square), in Slovakia’s UNESCO World Heritage town. Originally built in the 15th century, it later received a Renaissance makeover with a distinctive tower clock and currently houses a branch of the Spiš Museum focused on Levoča’s history. Just steps away, you can see St. James Church (Basilica of Saint James), which contains the world’s highest wooden Gothic altar by Master Paul. Next to the Town Hall stands the Cage of Shame, a rare 16th-century iron cage used for public punishment. Also nearby on the square are the beautiful Renaissance Thurzo House and the classicist Evangelical Lutheran Church with its large dome. A short walk up the hill above the town leads to Mariánska hora, with the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and stunning views over Levoča. Within about 15 minutes, you can visit the massive UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.
