The Old Minorite Monastery in Levoča is one of the town’s oldest sacred complexes, founded in the 13th century by the Minorite order. Its long history is marked by fires, reconstructions, and changing uses, yet the monastery has preserved a quiet, contemplative character that contrasts with the lively main square. One interesting fact is that it once served as a refuge during periods of unrest, thanks to its sturdy medieval walls and enclosed courtyards. Inside, visitors can explore the former cloister, where Gothic arcades frame a peaceful garden. The monastic church, rebuilt in Baroque style, contains altars with expressive sculptures and paintings reflecting the spiritual life of the order. Several rooms display fragments of medieval frescoes and architectural details uncovered during restoration, offering a glimpse into the monastery’s earliest artistic layers. The complex also hosts exhibitions on Franciscan history and the role of mendicant orders in medieval towns. Its calm atmosphere and preserved layout make it one of Levoča’s most evocative historical sites, revealing centuries of devotion, scholarship, and community service.

The Old Minorite Monastery in Levoča is located in the historic center of the UNESCO World Heritage town, on the edge of the main square (Námestie Majstra Pavla or Master Paul Square), near the corner where the square meets the surrounding medieval streets. The monastery building is part of Levoča's preserved medieval architecture and represents the town's rich religious and cultural history. Just steps away on the main square stands the magnificent Basilica of St. James, which contains the world's highest wooden Gothic altar by Master Paul of Levoča at 18.6 meters. Next to the Basilica is the historic Old Town Hall with its distinctive Renaissance tower clock, home to a branch of the Spiš Museum. The rare 16th-century Cage of Shame, an iron cage once used for public punishment, is also right on the square. The beautiful Renaissance Thurzo House, with its unique decorative facade, is nearby and now houses the regional archives. Across the square, you will find the classicist Evangelical Lutheran Church with its large dome. A short walk uphill leads to Mariánska hora with the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering spectacular views over Levoča. Within about 15 minutes, you can visit the UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.
