The Museum of Special Education in Levoča is a unique institution dedicated to the history of teaching children with visual and hearing impairments. Founded in a town long known for its pioneering schools for the blind, it preserves more than a century of innovation in inclusive education. Its exhibitions reveal how Levoča became a Central European centre for specialised pedagogy. Inside, visitors encounter early tactile textbooks, embossed maps, and ingenious teaching aids that allowed students to explore the world through touch. The collection of historic Braille writers and typewriters shows the evolution of Braille technology, while displays on sign language and communication methods trace the development of deaf education. One of the most striking sections presents personal items belonging to former pupils, offering a moving glimpse into their daily lives. The museum also reconstructs classrooms from different eras, allowing visitors to compare early teaching environments with modern approaches. It’s an intimate but deeply informative place, highlighting the creativity and determination behind accessible learning.
Levoča Slovakia
The Museum of Special Education in Levoča is located at Námestie Majstra Pavla 28, right on the main square (Master Paul Square) in the historic center of Levoča, Slovakia. The museum was established on November 16, 1990, in a burgher house at this location and is a specialized institution with Slovakia-wide competence dedicated to documenting the development of special education in the Slovak Republic. Just steps away on the same historic square stands the magnificent Basilica of St. James, which contains the world's highest wooden Gothic altar by Master Paul of Levoča at 18.6 meters. Next to the Basilica is the historic Old Town Hall with its distinctive Renaissance tower clock, home to a branch of the Spiš Museum focused on Levoča's history. The rare 16th-century Cage of Shame, an iron cage once used for public punishment, is also right on the square. The beautiful Renaissance Thurzo House, with its unique decorative facade, is nearby and now houses the regional archives. Across the square, you will find the classicist Evangelical Lutheran Church with its large dome. A short walk uphill leads to Mariánska hora with the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering spectacular views over Levoča. Within about 15 minutes, you can visit the UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.
