The Basilica of the Virgin Mary on Mariánska hora above Levoča is one of Slovakia’s most important pilgrimage sites, drawing worshippers since the 13th century. Its current Neo‑Gothic form dates to the late 19th century, when the growing crowds required a larger, more monumental sanctuary. An interesting fact is that Pope John Paul II elevated it to a minor basilica in 1984, recognising its centuries‑long spiritual significance. Inside, the basilica feels intimate despite its size. The main Marian altar features a revered statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child, a focus of devotion for pilgrims who climb the hill each July. Stained‑glass windows depict scenes from Mary’s life, filling the nave with soft colour. The side chapels contain votive offerings left by pilgrims—crutches, medals, handwritten notes—quiet testimonies of gratitude and hope. The basilica’s wooden ceiling, carved with floral motifs, adds warmth to the otherwise vertical Neo‑Gothic space. Don’t miss the surrounding pilgrimage complex, where paths, chapels, and stations of the cross create a contemplative atmosphere above the town.
Levoča Slovakia
The Basilica of the Virgin Mary in Levoča, also known as the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Bazilika Navštívenia Panny Márie), is located at the summit of Mariánska hora (Marian Hill), a hill 781 meters above sea level directly above the town of Levoča in Slovakia. Its address is Mariánska Hora 2, 054 01 Levoča. The basilica is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in eastern Slovakia, with its history starting in 1247. Below the hill in Levoča's historic center, you can visit the magnificent Gothic Basilica of St. James, the second-largest church in Slovakia, which contains the world's tallest wooden Gothic altar (18.62 meters) by Master Paul of Levoča. The historic Old Town Hall with its Renaissance tower clock stands right on the main square (Námestie Majstra Pavla), next to the rare 16th-century Cage of Shame. The beautiful Renaissance Thurzo House with its decorative facade is also on the main square and now houses regional archives. The classicist Evangelical Lutheran Church with its large dome is located south of the town hall. Within about 15 minutes, you can visit the UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.
