Levoča Town Walls

About

Levoča’s Town Walls form one of the most complete medieval fortification systems in Slovakia, encircling the historic centre with more than two kilometres of stone ramparts. Built mainly in the 14th and 15th centuries, they once featured three gates, several barbicans, and over forty towers. An interesting fact is that the walls were so well‑designed that Levoča was never successfully taken by force, even during the turbulent Hussite and anti‑Habsburg uprisings. Walking along the preserved sections, visitors can admire stretches of defensive ramparts with arrow slits and firing positions that reveal how the town protected its wealthy merchants. Several bastion towers survive, each with a slightly different shape reflecting evolving military needs. Near Košická brána, the walls reach their most impressive height, giving a vivid sense of the town’s former strength. Inside the circuit, traces of the former moat and outer earthworks can still be seen. The walls also offer excellent viewpoints toward the basilica, the Renaissance square, and the surrounding Spiš landscape.

Location

The Levoča Town Walls are medieval defensive fortifications that surround the entire historic center of Levoča, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in eastern Slovakia's Spiš region. The defensive walls were originally about 2.5 kilometers long and surrounded the town in an oval shape with longer sides running roughly north-south. Today, approximately 80% of the walls have been preserved, making them one of the best-preserved old defense systems in Slovakia. Inside the walls, you reach the main square, Námestie Majstra Pavla (Master Paul Square), one of the largest medieval squares in Central Europe. Here stands the magnificent Gothic Basilica of St. James, which houses the world's tallest Gothic wooden altar (18.62 meters) by Master Paul of Levoča. The historic Old Town Hall with its characteristic Renaissance tower clock is located right next to the church. Near the Town Hall is the rare 16th-century Cage of Shame, an iron cage used for public punishment. The beautifully decorated Renaissance Thurzo House with its unique Renaissance attic is also on the square. Across from it stands the classicist Evangelical Lutheran Church with its majestic dome.
