Košická brána, the Košice Gate of Levoča, is the best‑preserved remnant of the town’s once‑formidable medieval fortifications. Built in the 14th century and later strengthened during the Renaissance, it guarded the important trade route leading toward Košice. An interesting fact is that the gate originally formed part of a double‑towered defensive system with a drawbridge and moat, making it one of the strongest entry points into the walled town. Inside the passage, visitors can still see the stone vaulting and narrow openings used by guards to monitor approaching travellers. The upper floors, accessible during special events, reveal the defensive chambers where soldiers once stored weapons and kept watch over the road. Traces of Renaissance sgraffito decoration survive on the exterior, hinting at the gate’s later transformation from pure fortification to a more representative town entrance.

Košická brána is one of the preserved medieval city gates of Levoča, located on the northeastern edge of the historic center, at the entrance to the old fortified town. It was once the main gate leading toward Košice, and today it is an important reminder of Levoča’s former defensive walls. From the gate, it is easy to continue on foot into the old town, where many of Levoča’s best-known sights are concentrated. Nearby you can visit the Basilica of St. James, famous for its world-renowned wooden Gothic altar, and the historic Town Hall on Master Paul Square. Close by are also the Cage of Shame, the Renaissance Thurzo House, and the Church of the Holy Spirit, which stands near the gate itself. Košická brána is also a good starting point for a walk along the town’s surviving medieval fortifications. If you want to see more beyond the center, Mariánska hora above the town offers a beautiful pilgrimage site and wide views over Levoča and the surrounding Spiš region. For a longer excursion, the UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle is one of the most important attractions in the area and can be reached in a short drive.
