Basilica of St. James

About

The Basilica of St James in Levoča is one of the greatest Gothic churches in Central Europe, famed above all for the monumental wooden altar carved by Master Paul. Completed in 1517, it rises 18.6 m and is considered the tallest late‑Gothic wooden altar in the world. An interesting detail is that its figures were carved from limewood blocks so large that transporting them into the church required dismantling parts of the workshop door. Inside, the basilica reveals a remarkable collection of Gothic altars, each with its own iconographic programme. The Altar of St Peter, with its expressive apostles, is a highlight, as is the Altar of the Nativity with delicate polychromy. The church also preserves medieval wall paintings, including a rare depiction of the Last Supper with Slovak‑style tableware. The spacious nave is supported by slender pillars that create a sense of vertical lift, while the Baroque organ loft adds a later artistic layer. Don’t miss the Renaissance pews carved with coats of arms of Levoča’s guilds, offering a glimpse into the town’s civic pride.

The Basilica of St. James (Bazilika svätého Jakuba) is a magnificent Gothic church located in the center of Levoča's main square, called Námestie Majstra Pavla (Master Paul Square), in Slovakia's UNESCO World Heritage town. Building of the Gothic church began in the 14th century, and it dominates the main square of the historic town together with the Renaissance town hall. The church's address is Namestie majstra Pavla 52, Levoča. Right next to the Basilica on the main square stands the historic Old Town Hall with its distinctive Renaissance tower clock, which houses a museum focused on the history of Levoča. The rare 16th-century Cage of Shame, an iron cage once used for public punishment, stands next to the Town Hall. The beautiful Renaissance Thurzo House with its unique decorative facade is also on the same square and now houses regional archives. Across the square, you will find the classicist Evangelical Lutheran Church with its large dome and Greek cross floor plan. A short walk uphill leads to Mariánska hora (781m above sea level) with the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering spectacular views over Levoča and surrounding area. This is one of the oldest living pilgrimage sites in Slovakia. Within about 15 minutes, you can visit the UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.
