Master Pavol’s House in Levoča is a rare chance to step into the world of the most celebrated Gothic sculptor in Slovakia. The building, a modest burgher home near the main square, is traditionally associated with Master Paul, creator of the monumental wooden altar in St James’s Church. Although the exact location of his workshop is debated, the house offers an evocative reconstruction of the environment in which his masterpieces were born. Inside, visitors find exhibitions on Gothic carving, tools of the sculptor’s trade, and models showing how large altarpieces were engineered. The most compelling rooms explore the artistic process: from selecting limewood to layering polychromy and gilding. Replicas of Paul’s expressive figures allow close study of the dramatic faces and flowing drapery that define his style. The house also presents the cultural life of 16th‑century Levoča, with displays on guilds, patrons, and the flourishing trade that supported major artistic commissions. It’s a compact but atmospheric museum, offering a focused encounter with the craftsmanship behind one of Europe’s greatest Gothic ensembles.

Master Pavol's House (House of Master Paul) is located on Levoča's historic main square, Námestie Majstra Pavla (Master Paul Square), in burgher house no. 20 on the east side of the square, right behind the main church. The building's foundations date back to the 14th century, and its facade is notable for a distinctive seashell motif. The house belonged to Master Paul of Levoča, a famous late-Gothic woodcarver, and today houses a museum exhibition about his life and work. Please note that the exhibition is currently temporarily closed due to renovation. Just steps away stands the magnificent Basilica of St. James (Church of St. James), which contains Master Paul's greatest masterpiece: the world's highest wooden Gothic altar at 18.6 meters. Next to the square's historic Town Hall is the rare 16th-century Cage of Shame, an iron cage once used for public punishment. The beautiful Renaissance Thurzo House, with its unique Renaissance attic and decorative facade, is also on the same square and now houses regional archives. Across the square, you will find the classicist Evangelical Lutheran Church with its large dome. A short walk uphill leads to Mariánska hora with the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering spectacular views over Levoča. Within about 15 minutes, you can visit the UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.
