Maribor Regional Museum is housed in the graceful Maribor Castle, a Renaissance landmark that has watched over the city since the 15th century. The museum explores the cultural history of northeastern Slovenia, offering a journey through centuries of craftsmanship, daily life, and regional identity. Its setting adds to the experience: vaulted halls, painted ceilings, and elegant staircases create an atmosphere where history feels close and tangible. Inside, one of the most interesting sections is the collection of traditional costumes and textiles. These garments, richly embroidered and carefully preserved, reveal how local communities expressed status, identity, and artistry. The archaeological displays are equally compelling, featuring Roman-era artefacts discovered around Maribor—fragments of pottery, tools, and jewellery that trace the city’s ancient roots. A highlight is the castle’s Baroque Knights’ Hall, used today for exhibitions and concerts. Its ornate stucco work and painted decorations make it one of the most beautiful interiors in the region. The museum also presents a detailed look at Maribor’s guilds, showcasing tools, trade emblems, and objects that illustrate how shoemakers, blacksmiths, and other craftsmen shaped the city’s development.

The Maribor Regional Museum is housed in 15th-century Maribor Castle on Grajska ulica, right in the city center at Grajski trg. Originally built as a fortress and later converted into a nobleman’s residence, the Baroque castle is one of Maribor’s most striking landmarks. The museum, founded in the late 19th century, holds one of Slovenia’s richest collections covering archaeology, ethnology, art, and cultural history of the Maribor region. On the ground floor you’ll find archaeological finds from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, 19th-century beehive panels, Štajerska-style hayrack models, and wax votive offerings. Step outside the castle into Grajski trg, Maribor’s main castle square, ringed by cafes and historic buildings. The Franciscan Church with its red-brick façade and Plague Column stand on Glavni trg, the old town’s main square, just a short walk away. Stroll down to Lent, the lively Drava River waterfront, to see the Old Vine House and the world’s oldest vine, still producing grapes after 400 years. Wine lovers can book tastings of Štajerska wines there. Nearby are Maribor Cathedral, Town Hall, Vetrinjski dvor arts center, and Ulica Vita Kraigherja with its modern fountain.
