Location

Maribor Art Gallery, known locally as UGM, is located on Strossmayerjeva ulica, just southwest of Slomškov trg in the city center. Founded in 1954, it is the central public institution for modern and contemporary art in northeastern Slovenia. The gallery focuses on collecting, preserving, and presenting Slovenian visual art from the early 20th century to the present, while also hosting international exhibitions. Across Slomškov trg you’ll find Maribor Cathedral with its 57-meter bell tower and Baroque interior, and the University of Maribor buildings. A short walk leads to Grajski trg and Maribor Castle, home to the Maribor Regional Museum with archaeology, guild exhibits, and a stunning pink rococo staircase. From there, Glavni trg with the Town Hall and Plague Column connects to Lent, the old port on the Drava River. Here you can visit the Old Vine House, where the world’s oldest vine still grows after more than 400 years, and taste Štajerska wines. Also nearby are the Jewish Square, Maribor Synagogue, Water Tower, Judgment Tower, and Minorite Church.
