Betnava Castle

About

Betnava Castle is one of Maribor’s most elegant manor houses, known for its Baroque façade and long history as a noble estate. Although the original structure dates back to the 14th century, the castle gained its refined appearance in the 18th century, when the Counts Herberstein transformed it into a fashionable countryside residence surrounded by parkland. One of the most interesting facts is that Betnava once served as a Jesuit retreat, leaving behind traces of monastic life within its otherwise aristocratic architecture. The castle’s chapel is a highlight: a serene Baroque space with delicate stucco work and a painted altar that reflects the spiritual chapter of its past. Visitors also notice the grand central hall, designed for receptions and social gatherings, where fragments of original decorative elements still survive. Inside, the castle often hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and guided tours that reveal its layered history — from medieval foundations to noble salons and religious use. The surrounding park, once part of a formal Baroque garden, remains a peaceful place to wander and imagine the estate in its prime.

Betnava Castle
Location

Betnava Castle is a historic manor house set on the southern edge of Maribor, in the green district of Betnava. Surrounded by a large park and old trees, the castle sits slightly outside the bustling city center, giving it a calm, countryside feel while still being part of Maribor. The building dates back to the 16th century and was later remodeled in Baroque style, with a distinctive white facade and chapel. Today it’s used for events and cultural activities. Because of its location, Betnava Castle is close to some of Maribor’s nature and leisure spots. Just next to it is Betnava Park, a popular green space with walking paths, old tree avenues, and playgrounds. It’s a favorite for local families and a peaceful contrast to the city streets. From Betnava, you’re only a short drive or bus ride from Maribor City Park, the city’s largest park with three ponds, a promenade, and an aquarium-terrarium. The Pohorje foothills are also nearby, offering hiking and biking trails that lead up toward Maribor Pohorje, Slovenia’s largest ski resort in winter and a hiking area in summer.
