The Water Tower is one of Maribor’s most distinctive riverside landmarks, standing proudly on the Drava as a reminder of the city’s medieval defence system. Built in the 16th century, it originally served as a fortification protecting the river approach. Its thick stone walls and compact, angular form still reflect that military purpose, even though today the tower is known for something far more inviting. One of the most interesting facts is that the Water Tower once supplied the city with drinking water, using a clever hydraulic mechanism powered by the river. This blend of engineering and defence makes it unique among Maribor’s historical structures. Inside, the tower houses a charming wine cellar where visitors can taste Styrian wines in an atmospheric vaulted interior. The space is small but memorable: stone arches, cool air, and a sense of stepping back into centuries of riverfront life. Exhibitions occasionally highlight local viticulture, medieval Maribor, or the tower’s own transformation from fortress to wine haven.

Location

The Water Tower is a medieval defense tower standing on the banks of the Drava River in Maribor’s Lent district, the oldest part of the city. Built in the 16th century as part of the city walls, it once guarded Maribor from Ottoman invasions. Today its massive round stone structure is one of the best-preserved towers in town and houses a wine shop in its lower level. Its riverside spot makes it a perfect landmark for exploring Lent. Just steps away is the Old Vine House, home to the world’s oldest grapevine still producing grapes, with a small museum and wine tastings. The Drava promenade runs past the tower, ideal for walks with views of the river, bridges, and floating mills. Nearby you’ll also find Judgement Tower, another medieval tower that now hosts cultural events, and the Jewish Tower with the Maribor Synagogue, one of Central Europe’s oldest preserved synagogues. From here it’s a short stroll up to Glavni trg, Maribor’s main square, surrounded by Baroque facades, the Plague Column, and the Town Hall.
