Maribor City Park is the city’s green heart, a spacious landscape that blends history, leisure, and quiet beauty. Established in the late 19th century, it was designed as a formal promenade for the growing bourgeoisie, and many of its original features still shape the park’s character today. One of the most interesting facts is that the park once hosted grand public events and exhibitions, making it both a social and cultural stage for Maribor’s residents. Inside the park, visitors can explore several highlights. The Three Lakes area is a favourite, with calm water surfaces reflecting trees and sky — a peaceful spot for walking or photography. The park’s Aquarium-Terrarium is another attraction, home to exotic fish, reptiles, and small animals that make it especially popular with families. Nearby, the historic pavilion and tree‑lined avenues evoke the park’s elegant origins. The park also contains a remarkable collection of old and rare trees, some more than a century old, giving it the feel of a living botanical museum. Seasonal flower beds add colour, while open lawns invite picnics and relaxed afternoons.

Location

Maribor City Park is the largest and oldest public park in Maribor, located just north of the city center. Stretching from the edge of the Old Town toward the Pohorje foothills, it’s a green oasis with three ponds, tree-lined promenades, lawns, and playgrounds. At the entrance to the park you’ll find the Aquarium-Terrarium, home to freshwater and marine species, plus reptiles and small animals. The central promenade leads past cafés and the park’s ponds, which are especially scenic in autumn when the leaves change color. Because of its location, City Park is a natural gateway to other attractions. At its northern end, trails begin that lead up into Maribor Pohorje, Slovenia’s largest ski resort in winter and a hiking and biking area in summer. The Pohorje cable car base is nearby if you want to head up the mountain for views over Maribor and the Drava Valley. The park is about a 10-minute walk from Slomškov trg, with Maribor Cathedral and the University of Maribor. From there you can continue to Glavni trg, the main square with the Plague Column, then on to Maribor Castle and the Regional Museum. The Drava River promenade in Lent, with the Old Vine House and Water Tower, is also within easy reach. City Park combines nature, recreation, and quick access to Maribor’s historic core.
