Maribor Cathedral, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is one of the city’s most striking sacred landmarks, blending Romanesque origins with later Gothic and Baroque layers. The cathedral is also closely linked to Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek, an important Slovenian cultural figure whose legacy is honoured inside. The interior is rich yet harmonious. Maribor Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, is located on Slomškov trg in the heart of Maribor’s Old Town. Dating back to the 12th century, it’s the city’s main Roman Catholic church and a key landmark with its tall 57-meter bell tower. The Gothic and Baroque interior, along with the tomb of Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek, Slovenia’s first blessed, makes it an important religious and cultural site. Its central position means you’re within walking distance of many attractions. Slomškov trg itself is a leafy square bordered by the University of Maribor and the National Liberation Monument. From here, it’s just a short stroll to Glavni trg, Maribor’s main square, framed by Baroque facades, the Plague Column, and the Town Hall. Maribor Castle and the Regional Museum are only a few minutes away, set in a Renaissance courtyard with exhibitions on regional history. Head down toward the Drava River to reach Lent, the oldest part of town, where you’ll find the Old Vine House, the world’s oldest grapevine, plus the Water Tower and Judgement Tower.
