The Judgement Tower is one of Maribor’s most atmospheric medieval structures, rising above the Drava with its distinctive rounded form and thick defensive walls. Judgement Tower stands on the Drava River in Maribor’s Lent district, the oldest part of the city. Built in the 16th century as part of the city’s defensive walls, this round Renaissance tower once guarded the riverfront. Its name comes from the former practice of announcing court sentences nearby. Today it’s one of Maribor’s best-preserved medieval towers and is used as a venue for concerts and cultural events. The tower’s location puts you right on the scenic Drava promenade. Just a short walk along the riverbank is the Water Tower, another historic defense tower that now houses a wine shop. Right next door is the Old Vine House, home to the world’s oldest grapevine still bearing fruit, with a museum and wine tastings. From Judgement Tower you’re also steps from Maribor Synagogue in Jewish Square, one of Central Europe’s oldest preserved synagogues and now a cultural center. The Lent district itself is full of charm, with medieval towers, cobbled streets, and riverside cafés. Glavni trg, Maribor’s main square with the Plague Column and Town Hall, is about 5 minutes on foot. Continue on to Maribor Castle and the Regional Museum, Maribor Cathedral, and City Park.
