The Basilica of Our Mother of Mercy is one of Maribor’s most beloved spiritual landmarks, known for its striking twin towers and warm red‑brick façade. Built in the early 20th century by the Franciscan order, it quickly became a centre of devotion thanks to its revered statue of the Virgin Mary, brought from a pilgrimage site in Italy. This statue is considered miraculous by many locals, giving the basilica a special emotional resonance. Inside, the basilica feels both grand and intimate. The high nave is lined with slender columns and soft light filtering through stained‑glass windows depicting Marian themes. One of the most interesting facts is that the basilica was elevated to its status in 1985, recognising its importance in Slovenian Catholic life. The main altar, richly carved and gilded, draws the eye immediately, while side chapels offer quieter spaces for reflection. Visitors can also admire the organ loft, home to a beautifully crafted instrument often used for concerts and liturgical music. The basilica’s acoustics make these performances particularly memorable.

The Basilica of Our Mother of Mercy is a striking neo-Romanesque church located on Partizanska cesta, just a short walk from Maribor’s city center. Built in the early 20th century by the Franciscans, its red-brick facade and twin towers make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Maribor. Inside, you’ll find rich frescoes, stained glass, and the venerated statue of Our Mother of Mercy, making it an important pilgrimage site in Slovenia. Its position near the main city park and the train station makes it easy to combine with other sights. Right across the street is Maribor City Park, a large green space with three ponds, tree-lined promenades, an aquarium-terrarium, and cafés. The park is the gateway to Pohorje, where hiking and biking trails start and lead up to Maribor Pohorje, the country’s biggest ski resort in winter. From the basilica, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the Old Town. You’ll reach Slomškov trg with Maribor Cathedral and the University of Maribor, then continue to Glavni trg, the main square with the Plague Column and Town Hall. Maribor Castle and the Regional Museum are nearby, and the Drava River promenade in Lent is just beyond, with the Old Vine House, Water Tower, and Judgement Tower.
