Sponza Palace in Dubrovnik is one of the city’s most elegant Renaissance landmarks, a rare building that survived the 1667 earthquake intact. Its stone façade blends Gothic arches with refined Renaissance symmetry, reflecting the wealth and cosmopolitan spirit of the former Republic of Ragusa. For centuries it served as a customs house, mint, treasury, and cultural hub, making it one of Dubrovnik’s most versatile civic spaces. Inside, the highlight is the Memorial Room dedicated to the defenders of Dubrovnik during the 1991–1995 Homeland War. The chamber displays photographs, personal items, and a quiet audiovisual tribute that preserves the memory of those who protected the city. The palace’s inner courtyard is another gem: a serene, arcaded space where merchants once negotiated trade routes stretching from the Adriatic to the Ottoman Empire. Its acoustics are famously excellent, and today it often hosts exhibitions and classical concerts. Visitors also notice inscriptions carved into the stone, including a 16th‑century warning against corruption—an early testament to Ragusa’s strict civic ethics. Location

Sponza Palace, also known as Divona, is one of the most beautiful and historically significant secular buildings in Dubrovnik. It stands in the heart of the Old Town, on Luža Square, at the eastern end of the city's famous marble main street, the Stradun. The palace is easily reached on foot: it is a short, straight walk from either of the Old Town's main entrances, Pile Gate to the west or Ploče Gate to the east, as vehicles are not permitted within the historic city walls. Sponza Palace is surrounded by some of Dubrovnik's top attractions. Right beside it rises the City Bell Tower, and just in front stands Orlando's Column, the historic gathering point of the Republic. Opposite is the baroque Church of St. Blaise, patron saint of Dubrovnik. A few steps away you will find the Rector's Palace, now a museum, the Dubrovnik Cathedral and Treasury, and the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries. The Old Port and the entrance to the famous City Walls are also nearby, making Sponza a perfect starting point for exploring the Old Town.
