Franciscan Church and Monastery is one of Dubrovnik’s most serene and historically rich landmarks, standing just inside Pile Gate. The complex dates back to the 14th century, though much of it was rebuilt after the 1667 earthquake. Its cloister is the true jewel: a quiet, arcaded courtyard with delicate stone columns carved by local masters, each one slightly different. This cloister is considered one of the finest examples of late Romanesque architecture on the Adriatic. Inside the monastery lies one of Dubrovnik’s most fascinating treasures — one of the oldest functioning pharmacies in Europe, established in 1317. The pharmacy still operates today, and its small museum displays centuries‑old jars, medical books, and herbal preparations once used by the friars. The church itself features a richly decorated Baroque interior, with a high altar framed by marble columns and paintings by local and Italian artists. Visitors can also explore the monastery library, which preserves illuminated manuscripts, incunabula, and rare scientific texts that reveal Dubrovnik’s intellectual life during the Republic era. The atmosphere throughout the complex is calm and contemplative, offering a welcome contrast to the busy streets outside.

The Franciscan Church and Monastery is one of Dubrovnik's finest and most treasured historic complexes. It stands at the very beginning of the Stradun, the Old Town's main limestone street, just inside Pile Gate on the left side, next to the small Church of the Holy Savior. Its bell tower is a familiar landmark, and the long lateral wall of the monastery church runs along the Stradun. The complex is easily reached on foot, as vehicles are not permitted in the pedestrian Old Town. The monastery is surrounded by other major sights. Right beside it stand the Church of the Holy Savior and the Large Onofrio's Fountain, built in 1438, where visitors can drink fresh spring water. Pile Gate, the grand western entrance to the city, is just steps away, while the entrance to the famous city walls and the climb toward Minčeta Tower begin close by. A short walk east along the Stradun leads to Luža Square, Sponza Palace, the Church of St. Blaise, and the Rector's Palace.
