Fort St. John guards Dubrovnik’s harbour like a stone anchor, completing the defensive ring that protected the Republic of Ragusa’s maritime lifeline. Built and expanded between the 14th and 16th centuries, it served as the city’s main lookout against pirate raids and enemy fleets. Its angled walls and low profile were designed to absorb cannon fire, making it one of Dubrovnik’s most advanced early‑modern fortifications. Inside, the fortress feels like a compact maze of thick corridors, vaulted rooms, and narrow passages once used for storing gunpowder and naval equipment. Today, these interiors house two museums: the Maritime Museum, which traces Dubrovnik’s seafaring history through ship models, maps, and navigational instruments; and the Aquarium, located in the lower level, where Adriatic marine life is displayed in atmospheric stone chambers. The upper terraces offer excellent views of the harbour, Lokrum Island, and the curve of the city walls. One of the most interesting details is how St. John Fortress was designed to work in tandem with Revelin and the harbour chain — a massive iron barrier once stretched across the water to block enemy ships.

Location

Fort St. John, known locally as Sveti Ivan and often called Mulo Tower, is one of the most imposing strongholds in Dubrovnik's defensive system. It stands on the southeastern side of the Old Town, rising directly above the entrance to the Old Harbour and guarding the city from the sea. The fortress is easily reached on foot from either Ploče Gate, just a few minutes' walk through the Old Port, or Pile Gate, a ten-minute stroll along the Stradun. As the Old Town is a pedestrian zone, visitors arriving by bus or car are dropped near the gates and continue on foot. The fort is surrounded by many attractions. The Old Port itself, with its historic Great Arsenal and the Kaše breakwater, lies at its feet, while Revelin Fortress and Ploče Gate stand just to the east. A walk along the city walls leads northward to St. Luke's Tower and onward to Minčeta Tower. Inside the walls are Luža Square, Sponza Palace, the Rector's Palace, the Cathedral, and the Stradun, while boat trips to the island of Lokrum depart from the nearby harbour.
