Bokar Fortress stands guard on the western edge of Dubrovnik’s walls, projecting over the sea with a graceful semicircular form that hides its military strength. Completed in the 15th century and refined by the master builder Michelozzo, it was designed to protect the vulnerable Pile Gate and the old harbour entrance. Its rounded shape was revolutionary for the period, allowing cannon fire to deflect rather than shatter the stone — a clever innovation that helped keep Dubrovnik safe through centuries of conflict. Inside, Bokar is compact but atmospheric. You walk through thick corridors once used for storing gunpowder and artillery, then emerge onto terraces that reveal how perfectly the fortress integrates with the city walls. The upper platform offers striking views of Lovrijenac Fortress across the bay, creating one of Dubrovnik’s most iconic panoramas. During the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, Bokar becomes an open‑air stage, its battlements illuminated for theatre and music performances. One of the most interesting details is how the fortress was intentionally built with thinner walls on the city-facing side — a safeguard ensuring it could never be turned against Dubrovnik itself.

Bokar Fortress, also known as Zvjezdan, is one of the most beautiful and harmonious examples of medieval fortification architecture in Dubrovnik. It stands at the southwestern corner of the city walls, perched on a steep cliff overlooking the small Pile Bay and the Adriatic Sea. The fortress is reached on foot as part of the circular walk along Dubrovnik's famous city walls, and it is one of the first major landmarks visitors encounter when starting the walk from the main entrance near Pile Gate. Because of its position at the heart of the western walls, Bokar is surrounded by many other attractions. Just outside the walls, across Pile Bay, stands the imposing Lovrijenac Fortress, which offers the finest views of Bokar in return. A short walk along the walls leads north to the great round Minčeta Tower, the highest point of the fortifications. Inside the Old Town, close by, are the Franciscan Monastery with its historic pharmacy, the Large Onofrio's Fountain, and the Stradun, Dubrovnik's main marble street. Pile Gate itself, the grand western entrance to the city, is right beside the fortress, while the beaches and kayaking routes of Pile Bay lie just below its walls.
