The 21st of October Museum is one of Serbia’s most poignant memorial institutions, dedicated to the victims of the 1941 Kragujevac massacre. Located within the Šumarice Memorial Park, the museum stands as a stark architectural symbol: its angular concrete forms evoke broken lives and interrupted futures, creating an immediate emotional impact even before you enter. Inside, the museum presents a powerful narrative through photographs, personal belongings, and documents of the victims—students, teachers, workers, and ordinary citizens executed during the German reprisals. One of the most striking exhibits is the collection of school notebooks and drawings left behind by the children of Kragujevac, offering a heartbreaking glimpse into lives cut short. The museum’s multimedia installations deepen the experience with testimonies, archival footage, and soundscapes that recreate the atmosphere of wartime occupation. A central hall displays the famous poem “A Bloody Fairy Tale,” a cornerstone of Serbian remembrance culture. The minimalist design of the interior—bare walls, dim lighting, and open space—encourages reflection rather than distraction.
