Amidža's Konak

Amidža’s Konak is one of the most distinctive surviving buildings from the period when Kragujevac served as Serbia’s first modern capital. Built in the 1810s, it was part of the court complex of Prince Miloš Obrenović and named after Amidža, a trusted court servant known for his discipline and loyalty. The konak is the only fully preserved example of traditional Balkan residential architecture within the former royal compound, making it a rare window into early 19th‑century state life. Inside, visitors find a carefully restored interior that reflects the simplicity and elegance of the era. The wooden ceilings, low doorways, and whitewashed walls evoke the atmosphere of a Serbian konak before Western architectural influences arrived. The central hall, once used for official receptions, displays period furniture, weapons, and personal items connected to the Obrenović court. A highlight is the collection of traditional costumes, showing the blend of Ottoman and local styles worn by officials and guards. The museum also presents documents and artefacts illustrating Kragujevac’s political importance, including materials related to the first Serbian government institutions.
