Old Foundry Museum

Old Foundry Museum in Kragujevac is one of Serbia’s most evocative industrial heritage sites, a place where the country’s modern history was literally forged. Housed in the original 1850s workshop of the Military-Technical Institute, it preserves the atmosphere of early metallurgy: brick walls darkened by decades of production, heavy machinery that once powered the nation’s first armaments industry, and tools that shaped Serbia’s transition into a modern state. Inside, visitors can see the massive steam hammer, a rare surviving example of 19th‑century industrial engineering. The museum also displays original casting moulds, early rifles and cannons produced on-site, and detailed models showing how the foundry operated during its peak. One of the most striking exhibits is the reconstruction of the workshop floor, where molten metal was poured into sand moulds—an immersive reminder of the heat, noise, and precision required in early industrial work. The museum also highlights Kragujevac’s role in regional innovation, including the beginnings of Serbia’s automotive industry. Archival photographs, technical drawings, and personal tools of the craftsmen reveal the human side of industrial progress, making the Old Foundry not just a museum of machines but a story of ambition and resilience.
