Prince Mihailo's Konak

Prince Mihailo’s Konak in Kragujevac is one of the city’s most atmospheric historical residences, a quiet reminder of the period when Kragujevac served as Serbia’s capital. Built in the early 19th century, the konak once hosted Prince Mihailo Obrenović during his visits, and its preserved wooden ceilings, carved doorframes, and intimate layout still reflect the aesthetics of a young Serbian state shaping its identity. Inside, visitors can explore rooms arranged much as they were during the prince’s time. The reception hall displays period furniture, elegant mirrors, and portraits of the Obrenović dynasty, offering a glimpse into courtly life before Belgrade became the political centre. One of the most interesting features is the original ćilim collection—colourful woven carpets typical of central Serbia, each with symbolic patterns representing prosperity and protection. The museum also presents documents and personal items connected to Prince Mihailo’s reforms, including materials related to the liberation of Serbian cities from Ottoman rule. A small but compelling exhibit focuses on the cultural renaissance of the era, highlighting the beginnings of modern administration, education, and diplomacy.
