Šumarice Memorial Park

Šumarice Memorial Park is Kragujevac’s most solemn and powerful landmark, a vast landscape dedicated to the victims of the October 1941 massacre, when thousands of civilians—students, teachers, workers—were executed during the German occupation. Created in the 1950s, the park spans over 350 hectares, blending nature, memory, and art into one of Serbia’s most significant memorial complexes. At its heart stands the Museum 21 October, whose stark architecture symbolises broken lives and interrupted futures. Inside, visitors encounter photographs, personal belongings, classroom diaries, and testimonies that give voice to the victims. The museum’s dimly lit halls and minimalist design create an atmosphere of deep reflection, making it one of the most emotionally resonant museum experiences in the country. Scattered across the park are more than twenty monuments, each marking a site of execution. The most iconic is the “Interrupted Flight,” a white concrete sculpture shaped like a broken wing, dedicated to the murdered schoolchildren. Other memorials, such as the “Pain and Defiance” and the “One Hundred for One,” use abstract forms to express collective suffering and resistance.
