Bunardzhik Hill, also known as the Hill of the Liberators, is one of Plovdiv’s most emblematic natural landmarks—a volcanic rise shaped millions of years ago and later woven into the city’s cultural identity. Its slopes have revealed traces of ancient Thracian settlements, making it both a geological curiosity and an archaeological site. Climbing the hill leads you through winding paths shaded by old pines and acacias. Along the way, you’ll encounter historic terraces built during the early 20th century to create scenic viewpoints over Plovdiv’s old quarters. The summit is dominated by the Alyosha Monument, a 36‑meter statue of a Soviet soldier erected in 1957. Beyond its political history, it offers one of the most dramatic panoramas in the city, especially at sunset when the skyline glows in warm tones. Another highlight is the stone amphitheater on the southern slope, used for small cultural events and informal gatherings. Nature lovers will appreciate the hill’s biodiversity: kestrels circling above, lizards sunning on rocks, and seasonal wildflowers that soften the rugged terrain.

The hill is located at Halm Na Osvoboditelite, Plovdiv 4002, Bulgaria. It sits just west of the central district, within easy reach of the main downtown area. Because the hill rises right on the edge of the central district, you can easily walk or take a quick drive to many of Plovdiv's major cultural and historic attractions. Nearby at the base of Danov Hill, you can visit the Regional Natural History Museum and the Regional Archaeological Museum. Heading slightly east brings you to Dondukova Garden and the lively main pedestrian promenade along Knyaz Alexander I Street, home to the Ancient Roman Stadium and the historic Dzhumaya Mosque. A short walk further east leads straight into the famous Old Town of Plovdiv, where you can explore the ancient Roman Theatre of Philippopolis, the Nebet Tepe Fortress complex, and magnificent Bulgarian Revival-era museum houses.
