Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis

Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis is Plovdiv’s most iconic landmark, a Roman masterpiece built in the 1st century during Emperor Trajan’s reign. Carved directly into the slope of the Three Hills, it once seated around 6,000 spectators and hosted official ceremonies, musical performances, and even provincial council meetings. One of its most interesting facts is its remarkable preservation: much of the theatre was uncovered only in the 1970s after a landslide revealed the marble rows beneath modern buildings. Inside the site, visitors can explore the semi‑circular cavea, where tiered marble seats rise in elegant arcs. The stage building is equally impressive, with two‑storey columns and niches that once held statues of gods and emperors. Inscriptions carved into the stone record donors, officials, and even rules for audience behaviour, offering a direct voice from antiquity. The theatre’s acoustics remain extraordinary. Stand on the orchestra floor and even a whisper carries upward—one reason the venue still hosts concerts and festivals today. From the upper rows, visitors enjoy sweeping views over Plovdiv’s rooftops and the distant Rhodope Mountains.
