Nebet Tepe Fortress is the oldest heart of Plovdiv, a place where history stretches back more than six thousand years. This rocky plateau was once part of the Thracian settlement of Eumolpias, later transformed into the acropolis of ancient Philippopolis. Its long continuity of life is one of its most interesting facts: few European cities have a hill where Thracians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans all left their marks in the same stone. Inside the site, visitors can explore the massive fortification walls built during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Their surviving towers outline the ancient defensive system and offer sweeping views over Plovdiv’s rooftops. The water reservoir is another highlight—an enormous underground cistern that once supplied the upper city, demonstrating impressive engineering for its time. Scattered around the plateau are remains of gates and ramparts, stone foundations of ancient buildings, and lookout points that reveal why this hill was so strategically important. At sunset, Nebet Tepe becomes one of Plovdiv’s most atmospheric places, with locals gathering to watch the city glow below.

Nebet Tepe Fortress is located on the highest hill in the Old Town of Plovdiv, at Nebet Tepe, 4000 Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It is the place where Plovdiv was first founded, with fortress walls dating back thousands of years, from Thracian times through Roman and Byzantine periods. You just walk up the cobblestones from the Old Town and you are on top, with a fantastic panorama over the whole city. The location is amazing because you are already surrounded by the main sights. Right below you, inside the Old Town, you have the Regional Ethnographic Museum in the Kuyumdzhioglu House, plus famous Revival houses like Balabanov House, Hindliyan House and Lamartine House. Very close is the Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, still used for concerts. If you go a bit downhill you reach Hisar Kapia, the old eastern gate of the ancient city, the City Art Gallery and the Philippopolis Art Gallery and Museum. A few minutes more and you are at the Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis in the main pedestrian street, and at the Regional Archaeological Museum and the Natural History Museum.
