Regional Archaeological Museum Plovdiv is one of Bulgaria’s oldest cultural institutions, founded in 1882 and shaped by Plovdiv’s long history as a crossroads of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman worlds. Its collection is surprisingly rich for a regional museum, with more than 100,000 artifacts that trace the city’s life across millennia. Inside, the star attraction is the Thracian gold treasure, a dazzling set of ornaments and ceremonial objects that reveal the artistry of the ancient Odrysian kingdom. Equally impressive is the Roman lapidarium, where carved stones, statues, and inscriptions from ancient Philippopolis create a quiet open‑air gallery of empire. The museum also preserves one of Bulgaria’s finest collections of icon painting, showing how local workshops blended tradition with regional styles. An interesting fact is that many of the most important finds—such as the richly decorated burial gifts from Plovdiv’s necropolises—were discovered during modern construction works, turning everyday urban development into archaeological opportunity.

Location

The Regional Archaeological Museum in Plovdiv is right in the heart of the city, at 1 Saedinenie Square, 4000 Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It sits on the edge of the Old Town, in a beautiful historic building from the 1880s, so you are already in the best area for sightseeing the moment you step outside. It is one of those locations where you don't need to walk much to see a lot. Just around the corner you have the ancient Stadium of Philippopolis on the main pedestrian street, which is partly excavated right under the modern city. A few minutes away is the Old Town of Plovdiv itself, with its cobbled streets and Revival houses like the Balabanov House and Lamartine House. Very close by you will also find the Ethnographic Museum, housed in a stunning old mansion, and the Roman Theatre on top of the hill, one of the best preserved in the world. If you keep walking you reach Nebet Tepe, one of the oldest settlements in Europe with amazing views over the whole city.
