Hindliyan House

Hindliyan House is one of Plovdiv’s most refined Revival‑era mansions, built in 1835 for the wealthy merchant Stepan Hindliyan, whose trade connections stretched from India to the Mediterranean. This global reach inspired the house’s most interesting feature: its painted interiors, decorated with landscapes of Venice, Alexandria, Constantinople, and other cities Hindliyan visited. Few Bulgarian homes of the period display such cosmopolitan imagery. Inside, the mansion feels like a world of elegance. The winter salon is richly ornamented with floral motifs, while the summer salon opens toward the courtyard, catching soft natural light. The carved wooden ceilings are masterpieces of local craftsmanship, each pattern unique and meticulously executed. One remarkable fact is the presence of a private bathhouse, complete with a marble basin—an extremely rare luxury in 19th‑century Plovdiv. Visitors can explore rooms furnished with period furniture, embroidered textiles, and delicate household objects that evoke the lifestyle of a prosperous merchant family. The courtyard, with its quiet garden and stone fountain, adds a final layer of charm and offers a peaceful pause before returning to the cobbled streets of the Old Town.
