Church of St. Marina

Church of St. Marina is one of Plovdiv’s most distinctive sacred landmarks, instantly recognizable by its tall wooden bell tower rising above the surrounding streets. The current church was built in 1853, but the site has held Christian sanctuaries for centuries. One of its most interesting facts is that St. Marina is the patron saint of Plovdiv, making this church a symbolic spiritual centre for the city. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and intimate. The iconostasis is a masterpiece of woodcarving, filled with delicate floral motifs and gilded details that shimmer in the soft light. Many of the icons were created by renowned artists from the Debar School, whose expressive faces and rich colours give the interior a vivid, almost storytelling quality. The frescoes on the walls depict scenes from the life of St. Marina, adding a unique thematic focus rarely seen in other Bulgarian churches. Another highlight is the wooden bell tower—an architectural rarity in Bulgaria. Its open structure and vertical silhouette make it one of the most photographed features of the Old Town. The courtyard, shaded and peaceful, offers a quiet moment before stepping back into the lively streets of central Plovdiv.
