Aviation Museum Plovdiv

About

Aviation Museum Plovdiv offers a compact but fascinating journey through Bulgaria’s aviation history, set near the city’s airport where the sound of modern aircraft adds atmosphere to the exhibits. Founded in 1991, it preserves milestones from the country’s civil and military aviation, making it a rewarding stop for anyone curious about flight technology and national heritage. Inside, the highlight is the collection of historic aircraft, including early training planes, reconnaissance models, and machines used during Bulgaria’s mid‑20th‑century aviation development. One of the most interesting facts is that several aircraft were rescued from decommissioning and restored specifically for the museum, giving visitors access to machines rarely seen elsewhere. The cockpit displays are especially engaging: you can examine instrument panels up close, compare analog controls with later digital systems, and get a sense of how pilots navigated Bulgaria’s varied terrain. The museum also showcases engines, uniforms, navigation tools, and archival photographs that trace the evolution of Bulgarian air forces and civil airlines.

Location

The Aviation Museum Plovdiv is located a bit outside the city itself, right next to Plovdiv International Airport at Krumovo village, 4112 Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It is the only aviation museum in Bulgaria and sits on the territory of the old military air base, so you will see a large open-air exhibition with jets and helicopters as soon as you arrive. It is not in the center, but easy to reach by car on the way to the airport. Because it is at the airport area, you won't have the classic Old Town museums right next door, but you are still not far from Plovdiv's main attractions. In about fifteen to twenty minutes by car you are back in the city center where you can visit the Regional Archaeological Museum, the Regional Ethnographic Museum in the Old Town, and the Regional Museum of Natural History. Nearby you also have the Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis in the pedestrian street, the Ancient Roman Theatre, Nebet Tepe and the whole historic quarter with its Revival houses and art galleries.
