Armenian Church of Saint Sarkis

The Armenian Church of Saint Sarkis is one of Varna’s most intimate and historically layered sacred spaces. Built in the early 20th century by Varna’s Armenian community, it honours Saint Sarkis, a beloved warrior‑saint associated with protection, courage, and travellers. Its modest exterior contrasts with a warm, richly symbolic interior that reflects centuries of Armenian Christian tradition. Inside, the most striking feature is the hand‑painted iconostasis, where delicate colours and fine lines echo the miniature‑painting heritage of Armenian art. Many icons were donated by local families, creating a personal link between the church and the community it serves. A small but beautiful detail is the presence of khachkars, traditional carved stone crosses that embody Armenia’s unique spiritual artistry. Visitors can also see liturgical objects used during major feasts, including silver chalices and embroidered vestments that reveal the craftsmanship of Armenian ecclesiastical workshops.
