Varna Archaeological Museum

Varna Archaeological Museum is one of Bulgaria’s most impressive cultural institutions, offering a sweeping journey through millennia of history along the Black Sea coast. Founded in 1888, it houses treasures from the Paleolithic era to the Middle Ages, but its greatest fame comes from the Varna Gold—considered the world’s oldest processed gold, dating back more than 6,000 years. Inside, the highlight is the Varna Gold Collection, where delicate bracelets, beads and ceremonial objects reveal the sophistication of the Chalcolithic Varna culture. The Roman hall showcases mosaics, sculptures and everyday items from Odessos, the ancient city that once stood where Varna is today. Particularly striking are the marble statues and colourful floor fragments that hint at the grandeur of Roman villas. The museum also features an excellent medieval exhibition, including crosses, weapons and ceramics from the First and Second Bulgarian Empires. The Thracian artifacts—bronze helmets, ritual vessels and ornate jewellery—offer insight into the region’s warrior‑priest culture. A smaller but fascinating section is dedicated to ancient coinage, illustrating Varna’s role in regional trade networks.
