The Nicolaus Copernicus Observatory and Planetarium is one of Varna’s most engaging educational landmarks, blending science, imagination, and a touch of nostalgia. Opened in 1968, it was among Bulgaria’s earliest public planetariums, created during a period of strong national interest in astronomy and space exploration. Its distinctive dome, visible from the Sea Garden, hints at the cosmic journeys waiting inside. The main attraction is the planetarium hall, where a classic opto‑mechanical projector recreates the night sky with remarkable precision. Visitors can watch immersive shows that trace constellations, planetary motion, and deep‑space phenomena. The experience feels both retro and timeless, as the projector’s mechanical hum accompanies the unfolding of the universe above. A fascinating part of the visit is the astronomy exhibition, featuring models of spacecraft, meteorite fragments, and interactive displays explaining celestial mechanics. Children especially enjoy the scale models of the Solar System, which make distances and planetary sizes easier to grasp. The observatory also houses a small telescope terrace, used for public stargazing sessions when weather allows.

Location

You will find it right at the main entrance of the Sea Garden, the big seaside park of Varna. The address is Primorski Park 4, Entrance of Sea Garden, 9002 Varna. It is at the very start of the park, so you can walk there in about ten minutes from the city center. The building itself is from 1968 and was the first astronomical complex in Bulgaria, with an observatory, a planetarium and a Foucault pendulum tower, and there is a monument to Copernicus right in front. Because it sits in the Sea Garden, you are surrounded by attractions. Inside the park you have the Naval Museum, the Aquarium, the Natural History Museum, the Zoo and the Dolphinarium, all within a short walk through the trees. The Varna beach and promenade are just below the park, so you can combine stars and sea in one afternoon. When you walk out of the park towards the center, you are in five minutes at the Festival and Congress Center and the Varna City Art Gallery Boris Georgiev. A bit further are the Archaeological Museum of Varna with its famous gold treasure, the Ethnographic Museum, the Roman Baths and the big Dormition Cathedral, the symbol of the city. If you want to see something like a palace, take a short drive north along the coast to Euxinograd Palace, the old royal summer residence with a lovely garden by the sea.
