The Varna Museum of Modern History offers a vivid portrait of the city’s transformation from the late 19th century to the mid‑20th century, when Varna evolved from a quiet port into Bulgaria’s leading seaside resort. Set in a former girls’ school built in 1906, the museum preserves the elegance of the era with high ceilings, wooden staircases and sunlit halls that echo early urban life. The most engaging section is the Belle Époque hall, where photographs, fashion pieces and household objects recreate Varna’s rise as a cosmopolitan city. The seaside culture exhibit is a highlight, displaying vintage swimsuits, beach accessories and posters from the early decades of tourism—an irresistible glimpse into Bulgaria’s first “summer capital.” Equally fascinating is the urban development room, featuring maps, architectural plans and models that show how boulevards, gardens and public buildings reshaped Varna’s identity. The transport collection includes tram memorabilia and early motor‑vehicle items that marked the city’s modernization. A smaller but charming display focuses on daily life artifacts—toys, school materials, radios and domestic tools that capture the rhythm of Varna’s households across generations.
Varna Bulgaria
The Varna Museum of Modern History is in the old Greek quarter of Varna, a very pleasant historic area where you can still feel the 19th century atmosphere. The address is ul. 8-mi noemvri 3, 9000 Varna, Bulgaria, in the Greek Neighborhood, just a short walk from the city center. The museum itself is spread over three floors in an old mansion and shows how Varna became the sea capital – shipbuilding, crafts, trade and the first seaside resort life with old bathing suits and photos. Around it you have almost everything close by. Two minutes away are the Roman Baths of Odessos, the huge ancient thermae, and a bit further the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of National Revival and the Archaeological Museum with the famous gold treasure. You are also very close to the Naval Museum in the Sea Garden, the Aquarium, the Natural History Museum and the Cathedral of the Assumption. From the museum you can easily continue to the Sea Garden entrance, the beach promenade, the Opera House and the pedestrian shopping street, so it fits perfectly into a relaxed walking tour of central Varna.
