Puppet Theatre Varna is one of Bulgaria’s most charming cultural institutions, dedicated entirely to the art of puppetry—a tradition the city has nurtured since the 1950s. Its cosy building near the city centre hosts performances for all ages, but what makes it truly special is the craftsmanship behind the scenes. Inside, visitors can explore a delightful collection of hand‑made puppets, ranging from classic marionettes to rod and shadow puppets. Many are created by Bulgarian artists who blend folklore motifs with modern design, giving each character a distinct personality. The theatre often displays historic puppets from early productions, offering a glimpse into how styles and materials evolved over decades. The stage itself is designed for versatility, allowing quick transformations between fairy‑tale forests, underwater worlds, and miniature cities. A fascinating detail is the mechanical rigging system, still partly operated manually, which gives performances a tactile, artisanal feel. Between shows, the foyer exhibits sketches, costume fragments, and set models that reveal how a puppet play is built from concept to final performance. Known for its international festivals and workshops, Puppet Theatre Varna has become a meeting point for artists from across Europe.

You will find it at ul. Dragoman 4, 9000 Varna, Center. It is a quiet little street just a minute away from Independence Square and the main pedestrian area, so even if you don't know Varna well you will find it without any stress. The theatre was founded back in 1952 and is famous for its Golden Dolphin puppet festival, and there is even a small Puppet Museum on Sheinovo Street right next to it. Because it is so central, everything interesting is around you. Right on the square next to it is the Varna State Opera and the Drama Theatre, housed in the same grand building. A two minute walk brings you to the City Garden and lots of cafes. In less than ten minutes on foot you are at the big Dormition Cathedral, the symbol of Varna, and at the Varna City Art Gallery Boris Georgiev. The Archaeological Museum of Varna, with the oldest gold treasure in the world, and the ancient Roman Baths are also very close by. If you keep walking east you drop directly into the Sea Garden, the huge seaside park where you will find the Naval Museum, the Aquarium, the Natural History Museum and the Dolphinarium. And if you want to see something like a palace, take a short drive north along the coast to Euxinograd Palace, the old royal summer residence with a beautiful park by the sea.
