Varna Aquarium is a classic seaside institution, offering a close look at the rich marine life of the Black Sea. Opened in 1932, it is one of Bulgaria’s oldest scientific aquariums, originally created to support marine research in the region. Its historic building, facing the Sea Garden promenade, still carries the charm of early maritime architecture. Inside, the main hall presents Black Sea species that many visitors rarely see up close: sturgeons, turbot, mullet, and the curious pipefish with its elongated body. The aquarium also displays colourful Mediterranean and tropical fish, adding contrast to the more subdued palette of local marine fauna. A popular highlight is the tank with Black Sea sharks, small but fascinating creatures that reveal the diversity of the region’s ecosystem. Educational panels explain the unique conditions of the Black Sea—its lower salinity, limited oxygen zones, and the delicate balance that shapes its biodiversity. Visitors can also explore exhibits on marine conservation, including displays of shells, corals, and preserved specimens used for scientific study.

You will find it right inside the Sea Garden, the big seaside park that runs along the coast. The address is simply Sea Garden, Primorski Park, 9000 Varna. If you are coming from the center, just walk down through the park towards the sea and you will hit it. It is close to the beach promenade and the Naval Museum, so you can't miss it. The aquarium opened back in 1932 and focuses mainly on Black Sea fish and marine life, with some exotic species too. Because it is inside the Sea Garden, you have a lot around you. A few minutes walk away are the Naval Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Dolphinarium, the Zoo and the Copernicus Observatory and Planetarium which is at the main entrance of the park. All of them are perfect if you are with family. When you leave the park towards the city center, you are in ten minutes at the Festival and Congress Center, the Varna City Art Gallery Boris Georgiev and the big Dormition Cathedral, the symbol of Varna. Nearby are also the Archaeological Museum of Varna with the oldest gold treasure in the world, the Ethnographic Museum and the ancient Roman Baths, one of the largest Roman sites in Bulgaria. If you want to see something like a palace, take a short drive north along the coast to Euxinograd Palace, the former royal summer residence with a beautiful park right by the sea.
