University Botanical Garden Varna

About

The University Botanical Garden in Varna is one of the city’s most peaceful escapes, blending scientific research with a beautifully curated landscape. Established by Sofia University, it spans terraces overlooking the sea, creating a rare mix of academic garden and coastal scenery. Its collection includes more than 3,000 plant species, many arranged in themed zones that make wandering feel both educational and relaxing. One of the most interesting areas is the eco‑trail through the dendrological park, where visitors encounter rare trees and shrubs from Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Americas. The garden’s cactus and succulent greenhouse is another highlight, showcasing unusual forms and colours that thrive in Varna’s sunny climate. A small but charming detail is the presence of protected plant species, carefully labelled to show their conservation status. The garden also features a rose collection, blooming in vivid waves through spring and summer, and a tranquil Japanese corner with stone lanterns and water elements. Families often enjoy the open lawns and shaded paths, while plant enthusiasts appreciate the herbarium displays and seasonal exhibitions.

Location

It is located in the resort of Saints Constantine and Helena, just north of Varna. The address is Resort St. Konstantin and Elena, 9006 Varna, Primorski district. It is about eight kilometers from downtown Varna, right by the sea, so you get fresh sea air and lots of green in one place. You can easily get there by bus or a short taxi ride along the coastal road. This is the first eco park of its kind in Bulgaria, combining natural and cultivated areas with a big collection of exotic and local plants, roses and irises that are stunning in summer. Because it is in the resort area, you have beach and nature around you, but the classic sights are not far. Very close by is Euxinograd Palace, the former summer royal residence with a beautiful park that you can visit. A bit further south along the coast you come back into Varna and into the Sea Garden, the big seaside park where you will find the Naval Museum, the Aquarium, the Natural History Museum and the Dolphinarium. In the city center itself, about fifteen minutes by car, are the main museums like the Archaeological Museum of Varna with the oldest gold treasure in the world, the Varna City Art Gallery Boris Georgiev, the Roman Baths and the big Dormition Cathedral, the symbol of Varna.
