Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin is Varna’s most iconic landmark, rising above the city with its copper‑green domes and elegant stone façade. Completed in 1886, it was inspired by Russian church architecture, a reflection of Bulgaria’s newly regained independence. Its dedication to the Virgin Mary makes it one of the country’s most important Orthodox temples. Inside, the cathedral impresses with its rich iconostasis, carved from dark wood and filled with gilded icons that glow softly in the filtered light. Many of the murals were added in the mid‑20th century, blending traditional Orthodox imagery with a more modern artistic hand. A particularly interesting detail is the collection of stained‑glass windows, installed in the 1960s, which depict saints in vivid colours rarely seen in Bulgarian churches of that era. Visitors often pause at the royal doors of the altar, decorated with delicate biblical scenes, and at the memorial plaques honouring fallen soldiers from various periods of Bulgarian history.
