Varna City Art Gallery Boris Georgiev is one of Bulgaria’s most elegant cultural landmarks, housed in a former girls’ school from the early 20th century. Its spacious halls and tall windows create a calm, almost studio‑like atmosphere that suits the gallery’s mix of classical and contemporary art. The heart of the collection is dedicated to Boris Georgiev, the Varna‑born painter whose travels shaped his poetic, introspective style. His portraits and symbolic compositions stand out for their soft colours and spiritual undertones. Nearby rooms present works by major Bulgarian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, offering a clear overview of the country’s artistic evolution. One of the gallery’s most engaging features is its sculpture hall, where bronze and stone works are displayed with generous space, allowing visitors to walk around each piece. Temporary exhibitions frequently introduce photography, modern installations, and international artists, making every visit slightly different. A charming detail is the preserved historic staircase, which still carries the architectural character of the original school.
Varna Bulgaria
The Varna City Art Gallery Boris Georgiev is right where you want it to be if you are exploring Varna on foot. You will find it in the very heart of the city center, in a beautiful Neo-Gothic building that used to be the old Boys' High School from the late 19th century. The address is ul. Lyuben Karavelov 1, 9002 Varna, Center. You really can't miss it, it's just a few steps from the main pedestrian street and the entrance to the Sea Garden. Because of that central location, you have almost everything around you. Literally around the corner is the Archaeological Museum of Varna, which holds the famous Varna Gold Treasure, the oldest gold in the world. A short walk away are the large Roman Baths, one of the biggest preserved Roman sites in Bulgaria. If you like churches and architecture, the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral, the symbol of Varna, is just five minutes away. And from the gallery you can directly stroll into the Sea Garden, Varna's huge seaside park where you will find the Naval Museum, the Aquarium, and the Natural History Museum. For something more royal, Euxinograd Palace, the old summer residence of the Bulgarian royal family, is a short drive north along the coast.
