Archaeological Museum of Durrës

Archaeological Museum of Durrës is one of Albania’s richest windows into antiquity, a coastal museum that reveals how this ancient port connected the Adriatic world with Rome, Byzantium, and the Balkans. Its collection spans more than two millennia, offering a vivid sense of daily life in the city once known as Dyrrachium. Inside, the most striking pieces are the Roman mosaics, including fragments of floors decorated with geometric patterns and marine motifs. The museum also houses an impressive range of Hellenistic ceramics, amphorae used for wine and oil transport, and finely crafted terracotta figurines that show the city’s artistic connections across the Mediterranean. One of the most interesting facts is Durrës’ role as the starting point of the Via Egnatia, the great Roman road linking the Adriatic to Byzantium. This history is reflected in the museum’s collection of Roman inscriptions and funerary steles, which reveal names, professions, and stories of the city’s ancient inhabitants. The sculpture hall is another highlight, displaying marble busts, reliefs, and statues that once adorned villas and public spaces. Smaller objects—jewellery, tools, coins—add intimate detail, showing how people lived, traded, and worshipped.
