Ethnographic Museum of Durrës offers an intimate look at coastal Albanian life, housed in a charming 19th‑century villa that once belonged to a prominent local family. Its wooden balconies, carved ceilings, and traditional layout already set the tone: this is a museum where architecture and collection work together to tell a story. Inside, the highlight is the display of traditional costumes from the Durrës region, richly embroidered and reflecting the city’s blend of coastal and inland influences. You’ll also find household objects—woven carpets, copper cookware, wooden chests—that reveal how families lived, cooked, and celebrated. The guest room is especially interesting, arranged exactly as it would have been for receiving visitors, with low seating, decorative textiles, and symbolic items meant to show hospitality. One of the most fascinating facts is how many objects were preserved privately during the communist era, when traditional culture was often discouraged. These items later formed the core of the museum’s collection, making it a true community archive.
Durrës Albania
The Ethnographic Museum of Durrës is actually housed in the old family home of the famous actor Aleksandër Moisiu, right in the historic heart of the city. You will find it at Rruga Kolonel Tomson, Durrës, just a short walk from the city center and the seafront. The house itself is a nice example of 19th century architecture and inside you can see traditional clothes, tools and everyday objects that show how people lived in Durrës in the past. Because it is so central, you have a lot to see around it. The Durrës Amphitheatre is just around the corner, one of the biggest Roman amphitheatres in the Balkans. Next to it is the Fatih Mosque and the old Byzantine city walls with the Venetian Tower, which marks the old entrance to the town. A few minutes walk away is the big Archaeological Museum on Rruga Taulantia, with Greek and Roman finds from ancient Dyrrhachium, and the Vollga promenade along the beach with cafes and restaurants. If you want to keep exploring, the Royal Villa of Durrës is up the hill and the port area is right there too.
