Durrës Amphitheatre

About

Durrës Amphitheatre is one of Albania’s most extraordinary ancient monuments, a rare Roman structure that still reveals its layers of history as you walk through it. Built in the early 2nd century, likely under Emperor Trajan, it once held up to 20,000 spectators who gathered for gladiatorial games and public ceremonies. Its elliptical form is carved directly into the hillside, giving it an unusual depth compared to other Balkan amphitheatres. Inside, the most striking feature is the small Christian chapel added in the 5th–6th century, decorated with vivid mosaics of saints and geometric patterns. These mosaics, though partially preserved, offer a glimpse into the moment when the amphitheatre shifted from a place of spectacle to a sacred refuge. Visitors can explore the underground galleries where gladiators prepared for combat, as well as the upper terraces that reveal how the arena was engineered for crowd flow and acoustics. The site remains partly excavated, so each visit feels like witnessing archaeology in progress—an ancient monument still slowly returning to light.

Location

The Durrës Amphitheatre sits in the old city centre of Durrës, Albania, right along Rruga Kalase. You’ll find it tucked against the hillside among the remaining stretches of the ancient walls, just a short walk inland from the seafront and the main square area. From the amphitheatre it’s only a few minutes on foot to the Venetian Tower and the surviving sections of Durrës Castle walls that once protected the town. Nearby you’ll also come across the Fatih Mosque and the larger Great Mosque a little further along. The Archaeological Museum is close enough for an easy visit if you want to see the finds that have come out of the ground around here. The Aleksandër Moisiu Theatre and the Byzantine Forum area are just around the corner too, and the waterfront promenade sits within easy walking distance. Everything in this historic pocket of the city is compact, so you can wander between the amphitheatre, the walls, the mosques and the museum at a relaxed pace without covering much ground.
